Making Movies

For the last two months we have been learning to make short films using an iPad to film them.

First, we made simple knock knock jokes. This helped us to recap on filming and editing short scenes. We got into a small groups and picked out three different jokes. I enjoyed making these jokes because I learnt different filming skills.

Then we moved on to making more advanced short films. We came up with a simple plot for a short movie. We tried to make films with continuity (with no gaps in the action). After filming them, we started editing and then we added credits.

Over the course of these past two months, I have learnt how to film and edit short films. I have enjoyed making these movies and I would like to make more later on the year.

The Colossus was built in 1943

The Colossus:

The Colossus was created by Dr. Thomas (Tommy). The tape held the coded German text in whole patterns punched on a tap.

The colossus was a computer used to read the messages of the Germans during WW2.

                                    THE HISTORY OF COMPUTERS

Pop 8
It belonged to a class of computers  called minicomputers which were smaller and cheaper.DEC dominated the minicomputer market. By late 1973, the PDP-8 family was the best computer in the hole  world. The PDP-8 has been described as the model-T of the computer industry because it was the first computer to be  the mass produced at a cost.

It cost £18,000 (equivalent of £300,000 today)and had only 4k of memory

Acorn computers

Computers,  was a huge success, 1.5 million were sold, mainly to schools in the early 1980s the BBC wanted to release a branded computer to support the BBC Computer Literacy Project. The BBC Micro was produced by Acorn Computers, and was a huge success

How Computers Are Made

Computers are made of two parts hardware and software
The Hardware is any part of the computer that is physical-A monitor, a mouse and speakers.
The Software is any set of instructions that tells the hardware what to do.

Here is a short video about how a computer is made

What is a computer

A computer is an electronic device that proceses data stored as ones and zeros.

Computers need hardware and software to work. Hardware is any physical part of computer which includes all of the internal components such as the memory and also the external parts like the monitor and the keyboard.

Web Browser: The type of software needed to access the internet. The most popular types of Internet are: Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome and Safari.

Old Computers

Colossus

Colossus was one of the very first digital computers in the world. Around 9 were built during World War 2.  The Germans wanted to send and receive messages but they didn't want the allies to understand them. They used their Enigma Code to encrypt their messages. The allies used Colossus to break the code and read the messages.

Arthur Scherbius was the creator of Enigma code but unfortunately Arthur was killed in a horse carriage accident in 1929.

ICL  Mainframe

The ICL 2996 is a computer from the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. There are a large number of its own units, numerous RAM disc drives, a processor, input tape reader and lots more!

The History of Computing
Colossus
Colossus was one of the first electronic digital computers created. About 9 of them were created in Britain during World War 2, and was used to decode German coded messages. By breaking these codes, the Allies were able to find out Hitler’s and his general’s next moves. The codes were imputed from holes in a paper tape that the computer could read at a speed of 5000 characters per second and the punched tape ran in a continuous loop. This took about 15 years to create through the work of volunteers who sacrificed their time and were not paid anything.

How to build a computer

Computers are made up of two simple components – hardware and software

  • ·        Hardware is any external part of the computer: such as the mouse, hard drives, monitor etc.
  • ·        Software is any set of code that instructs the hardware what to do. Without the software instructing the computer what to do the hardware is pointless.

What is a computer?

What is a computer?
In easy words, a computer is actually just an electronic device that stores and process lots of data. In today’s world, computers are everywhere and are super common.  We a surrounded by these little devices now, from the time we wake till the time we go bed, our lives depend on them really. To be honest I think this is bad for our new generation, these days little kids the age of 5-7 already are playing on mobile smart phones and exploring the internet. Anyways, in the past 100 years there have been made many improvement and advances without these advances we would be living the way we did centuries ago!

Online shopping...?

The rise of online shopping has affected most high street stores (businesses), such as music stores, book stores, card shops and technology retailers. Did you know due to this, the average for every person using tech to shop online is around £1,083 each year! And even more surprising it is about, £250 more per person than Australia, and when you think of it the U.K is way smaller than Australia!

What is a computer?

Watch this short clip about a computer, made for LGFL(London Grid For Learning).
A computer is a device that stores data. You store information such as the internet, google, web browser and file. In computers it has viruses, worms and others. In the last 100 years many people how been making new kinds of computers. They have been making computers for centuries.

History Of Computing

                                  History of computing
Here is a short video to introduce you The History of Computing from the company LGFL. (London Grid for Learning)

A few things about the history of computing

Every computer needs software and hardware. The hardware is the part of the computer which you touch; it is the keyboard and monitor. It stores the memory, web browsers, media player and word processor. The server provides information for computers.

Every game in 1980 to 1990 can be made by schools nowadays. Back then they would be really excited for a simple game with simple code. If children in schools would know all of that the look on their face would be like this.

Music and Computers

Musicians were limited to only one instrument so they need a whole band for some music and now on computers can use all sorts of instruments. That’s why normally we see only one singer with a bunch of music in the background. This all started approximately 15 years ago.

Gaming

In the 1970s gaming for children and adults was a whole new story. Instead of dvds they would use cartridges, it would still take up a lot of their time like we do.

Hope you enjoyed this :)

Tommy Flowers

Under war-time pressure it took just eleven months for Tommy Flowers to design and build Colossus at the Post Office Research Station, Dollis Hill, in North West London. After a function test, Colossus Mk 1 delivered to Bletchley Park in late December 1943, and was working by early January 1944.

Colossus was a computer used to decode the German messages during World War II.

ICL Mainframe

A ICL 2966 was a mainframe computer made in the late 1980s and also the early 1990s. The one that LGFL used was used by a company called Tarmac to also help run its road for construction business. There is a very large number of separate units for the ICL mainframe, and multiple RAM disc drives, a processor, input tape reader, output printer and magnetic tape drives for data backup. They fill a room.

Here is a video on the ICL mainframe made by LGFL.
