The History of
Computing
Colossus
Colossus was one
of the first electronic digital computers created. About 9 of them were created
in Britain during World War 2, and was used to decode German coded messages. By
breaking these codes, the Allies were able to find out Hitler’s and his general’s next moves. The codes were imputed from holes in a paper tape that the
computer could read at a speed of 5000 characters per second and the punched tape
ran in a continuous loop. This took about 15 years to create through the work
of volunteers who sacrificed their time and were not paid anything.
